Nanny McPhee Movie Review

Reviewed by: nutty chick
Nanny McPhee cover imageStory line

Nanny McPhee is the enchanting story of a magical governess (Emma Thompson) and her charges 7 intelligent but very naughty children and their widowed father Mr Cedric Brown (Colin Firth). Since Mrs Brown's death the children have terrorised 17 nannies until Mr Brown hires the mysterious Nanny McPhee after her sudden arrival one evening whilst the children are terrorising the cook Mrs Blatherwick (Imelda Staunton) in the kitchen. The only person who sees any good in the children is the scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) who is also in love with her employer Mr Brown. In her free time Evangeline studies with the help of the children in the hope that she will become good enough for Mr Brown to fall in love with her.

The children led by Simon (the eldest boy) try to concoct several schemes in the hope of scaring away the new nanny. But Nanny McPhee is wise to their schemes and teaches the children 5 lessons with the help of her magical cane.

The great twist in this story comes in the shape of great aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) who tells Mr Brown that he must remarry within one month or she will stop his allowance and that would mean the household being torn apart and Mr Brown going to the debtor's prison. But to help the burden on him will take one of his daughters away to be adopted by herself.

Mr Brown decides that the only course of action is to marry the ghastly Selma Quickly (Celia Imerie). Of course the children do everything they can to stop this from happening and then Mr Brown has to tell the children why he was going to marry her in the first place. The children after seeing the error of their ways goes to Ms Quickly and asks her to marry their father so they can keep the family fortune.

I'm not going to spoil the ending for you but will say that this film has charm aplenty and does have a happy ending for nearly all involved.

The only thing I can say that really did disappoint me was it isn't really explained why Nanny McPhee transforms into a normal looking woman.

The computer animation is fantastic I really can't fault it and all the stars shine in this film with some brilliant acting from Emma Thompson, I would highly recommend this film to anyone with or without children. I personally believe that it will become a classic along with any Disney film.
