The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift Movie Review

Reviewed by: Mark Allchin
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift cover imageStory Line

Tokyo Drift is the third installment of The Fast and the Furious films, the story starts in a high school in the US with our hero Shaun Boswell (Lucas Black) getting involved in another car race, which ends up with him in custody and facing charges for driving offences. This is the third time he has been caught and previously his mother moving away from the town has kept him out of jail, however, this time he finds himself moving to Tokyo to live with his father.

Within hours of his arrival he finds himself in a race, the problem he faces is that in Japan they do not just race they DRIFT! Foolishly he borrows a car and races a local mafia gangster in a multi-storey car park with an hilarious outcome. Now he is indebted to the mob and is recruited as a runner for them, this lands him a nice shiny Evo VIII to play with.

Boswell falls for Neela (Nathalie Kelley) the gorgeous girlfriend of DK - who just happens to be the nephew of the head of the mafia. This lands our hero in loads of trouble which leads to the obvious face off between DK and Shaun, who has now mastered drifting at the expense of a few panels and lots of tyres on the EVO.

Conclusion

I was seriously looking foward to this film as I really enjoyed (in a laddish way) the first two in the series, with VIn Diesel and Paul walker both performing really well in their respective roles. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Lucas Black who has to be the most untalented, wooden actor I have ever seen.

So on to the film, the story line is not bad at all, bad boy gets involved in the racing scene and falls for beautiful girl is pretty much the norm for the series now. The cars are superb, there are gorgeous girls aplenty and the stunts are fantastic to watch, all as one would expect.

What do I actually think of the film? well other than the extremely poor casting of the leading role, I think the film holds up pretty well, Sung Kang as Han is awesome as is Bow Wow in the role of Twinkie.
Worth getting if you liked the first two and want to complete the set, otherwise I would suggest renting it out or waiting for a reduced priced box set.
